frigates at the volcano room

Friday, December 12th, 2008

frigates played at the volcano room last night – it was pretty sweet even though it was poorly attended – it’s getting colder and colder in chicago – i’m thinking that next year, I’m going to take the winter months off – or move somewhere where it’s always warm – RPM challenge is coming up in february and there’s just one show (frigates, january 9th @ quencher’s) scheduled – could be a good time to stay in

when we went to detroit, I brought Viva Equals for the ride and brian and marc both totally dug it (which is awesome, because I love this band – big thanks to johnny sheeran for the tip – and I show them to people all the time with varying degrees of shared-enthusiasm) – especially, (one of my favorite equals songs>, Michael and The Slipper Tree – anyway, long story short: we played it at the show – I can’t find a good video of that on youtube, but here’s a rad video of them playing a bunch of songs live back in their prime

dig eddy grant’s rad guitar (and everything else about this band that is totally awesome)!

pee on the bee

Saturday, November 22nd, 2008

driving home from detroit, we stopped at a rest stop – all the urinals had little bee pictures in them – “pee on the bee?” – I don’t get it, but I kinda like it

frigates in detroit!

Saturday, November 22nd, 2008

whenever I think of (or hear the word) detroit, I think of the scene in ‘a fistful of yen’ when dr klahn has the american spies captured and he beheads one and the other says that he’s not scared of death and dr klahn goes “take him to … DETROIT!” and the spy starts screaming “nooooo!! nooooo! not detroit!!!” as they drag him away

anyway – marc brian and I drove up to detroit on friday to play a show – we were at LJ’s Lounge and we played with scarlet oaks (brian knows these guys from way back) and the high strung

it was really fun – the bar is a total dive – we had to move the pool table out of the way so we could play and scarlet oaks brought a PA system since there isn’t one – they played second and did a cover of “don’t cry no tears” which was pretty rad

barely related to that, in the last week I’ve heard two really awful neil young covers on the radio – one – a bubbly euro version of “only love can break your heart” was at atlas cafe – I can’t remember the details on the other thankfully

the headliner was the high strung they kicked ass – I was really into their set – by the end I had gravitated right up to the front – they were playing their second encore and the bassist and guitarist switched instruments – the end of the song had a jam and the guitarist came up to me and was like “do you want to play? it’s in a!” and I was like “fuck yeah” and took the bass and we jammed out for a really long time – some other dude joined in on the drums and hacker spouted some poetry

dig these photos!

frigates in the studio – playing with my organ

Saturday, October 25th, 2008

I went back into the studio with brian to finish my parts for the frigates record on wednesday – I did 3 organ parts (for damages & liabaility + help me, insanity + hey, cougar) and brian threw down some guitar parts – brian went back on friday – I’m not sure how far he got since he’s a jerk and won’t return my email

frigates in the studo – part 2/4(?)

Monday, October 6th, 2008

had another slow day in the studio – not that it was unproductive, but things are taking longer than expected – plus we have to tear everything down completely at the end of every session since it’s in a real studio with clients every day

and when I say “real” studio, I am not fucking around: this is the studio where joel chasnoff recorded his undisputed masterpiece hanukah guilt!

there’s a sample bit on his site for those that are interested

anyway, we got all the rhythm tracks solid (with a few punch-ins and edits) and two more days scheduled for doing vocals, solos and organ but we won’t have this thing finished anytime soon sadly

frigates in the studio – part 1

Sunday, October 5th, 2008

I spent the entire day (12+ hours) in the recording studio with frigates at studio media – Marc’s roommate, Ben, engineered and
sturdy came out and took some photos that I’m anxious to see

we played the songs really fast (not really quickly though) and ended up spending about 12 hours in the space – it was intense but we got a lot done

back again tomorrow for overdubs – we probably won’t have enough time to finish

frigates @ ronny’s

Saturday, September 20th, 2008

frigates played at ronny’s last night – we played first and it was definitely the best show by far – I’m really glad that a lot of people showed up – Adam and Ryan both made it – so did derek, aya, James and Sasha and probably others that I forgot

Ronny’s really sucks – I used to like it but it’s a total drag now – the cover is $7 donation and you get an attitude if you offer less – plus bands no longer get a guest list or beer tickets! And the smell of piss and shit was much worse than usual

The other bands were atlatl who were really good and raise high the roof beams headlined – they had an acoustic guitar and a laptop on stage and that really bugged me

We came back to my place and watched The Shining (with the sound off) and listened to Morris Day and Curtis Mayfield and Richard Hell – unfortunately, most of my friends are all suckas that can’t hang and went home as soon as we finished playing

los frigates del humboldt park

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

I really like my new band – brian and marc are both cool guys and the songs are really good and they both play really well – also, it’s really cool not to have to do all the work – in ASM I tend to do a lot of the work – writing songs, singing, guitar solos, booking shows – but in frigates, I pretty much just show up and play busy bass lines

brian talked about going on tour last night – he talked about memphis and detroit and I’d be pumped to do either/both since I’ve never been to either place – yeah – tour would be rad

anyway, we rehearsed last night and just flew through the set – pretty much nailing everything on the first try – I’m proud of us
